SOLA is a small Stockholm-based jewellery brand that I, Hedda, created in 2023 after moving back home following my studies in jewellery design in Florence and documentary filmmaking in Milan.
The name SOLA is a small wordplay between Swedish and Italian. In Swedish, sola means "to bask in the sun," which I used to do obsessively growing up. It used to drive my mum insane. But when you live in Sweden, you learn to appreciate the sunny days.
In Italian, though, the meaning shifts. When I was a child, my grandmother once read my palm and told me I would grow up to be very independent. In Swedish, the word for "independence" contains a term that can also mean "alone," and since I didn't understand the nuance at the time, I thought she was telling me I would grow up to be very lonely. It felt like a bad prophecy. In Italian, sola is the feminine form of being "alone", and da sola means doing something by herself or on her own. The name, in a small way, is my acceptance of that early fear of loneliness; what once sounded like a bad omen now feels more like a quiet kind of strength.
SOLA is still growing and changing shape every day, but that's part of the fun. I just hope you'll enjoy my creations as much as I enjoy making them.
